Rank Math schema for affiliate reviews should describe the page readers can actually see. Schema is not a shortcut for earning stars, and an affiliate link does not automatically make an article a Product page. Start with the page’s main purpose, add only properties supported by visible evidence, and validate the published output.
For a single-product editorial review, Product markup with a nested Review may be appropriate. A general tutorial is usually better represented as Article. A comparison of several unrelated products needs extra caution because Google’s product rich-result guidance focuses on pages about one product or variants of the same product.
Choose schema by page type
| Visible page | Likely primary type | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| How-to or informational guide | Article | Do not invent a product rating |
| Editorial review of one product | Product with Review | Rating and reviewer must be visible and genuine |
| Multiple-product comparison | Article or carefully scoped items | Do not imply the page is one product |
| Your own sales page | Product with Offer | Keep price and availability current |
Article, Product, and Review are not interchangeable
Article markup describes editorial content: headline, author, publication dates, and image. Product markup identifies a specific product. Review expresses an evaluation by a real author or organization. Rank Math’s schema tools can connect these entities, but selecting a template does not make the underlying claims true.
If the post does not show a rating, reviewer name, reviewed item, and evaluation, do not hide those facts only in JSON-LD. Google requires structured data to represent visible page content. The same rule applies to pros and cons: the reader should be able to find them on the page.
A safe single-product review setup
- Make the reviewed product the clear subject of the page.
- Name the author and explain the testing or research method.
- Display a rating only if you can explain the scale and justify the score.
- Show specific advantages and limitations in the article.
- Use Product as the reviewed item and nest the editorial Review appropriately.
- Add Offer data only when it is accurate, relevant, and maintained.
- Validate the published URL with Google’s Rich Results Test.
Rank Math’s Review Schema guide supports editorial reviews, including affiliate products. Google says product snippets require Product markup with at least one of review, aggregateRating, or offers. Eligibility does not guarantee a rich result; Google decides how search results appear.
Ratings: evidence before stars
A rating should come from a defined method, not from the commission rate or a desire for a colorful search result. Create a rubric such as setup, core feature quality, support, value, and limitations. State how each category was assessed and when. If you have not tested the product, write a researched overview without a personal rating.
Do not manufacture aggregate ratings. AggregateRating represents multiple ratings and needs a real, documented source and count. One author’s review belongs in Review, not a fictional customer average.
Pros and cons markup
Google’s product snippet documentation says the pros-and-cons enhancement is for editorial product review pages, not merchant product pages or customer reviews. It requires at least two positive or negative statements in total. Rank Math exposes pros and cons for review articles added as posts or pages.
Keep each statement specific. “Fast setup with the default wizard” is more useful than “great.” “Advanced schema customization requires the paid tier” is more useful than “bad.” The marked-up list and visible article should agree.
Affiliate links and editorial trust
Schema does not replace disclosure. Place a clear affiliate notice before the first commercial link, and mark paid or commission-bearing outbound links with rel="sponsored" (often combined with nofollow). Explain who the product is for, who should skip it, what alternatives exist, and how conclusions were reached.
Original value can be a setup diary, timed workflow, screenshots, reproducible performance test, support interaction, or comparison rubric. Avoid claiming hands-on use if the article is based on documentation. Honest sourcing is more durable than simulated experience.
Price and availability pitfalls
Affiliate review prices change. If you include Offer properties, create a maintenance process for price, currency, availability, and URL. A prose phrase such as “check current pricing” is safer than stale exact pricing, but it does not justify inserting guessed Offer data into schema.
For WooCommerce products you sell yourself, the source of truth and schema needs differ. See the Rank Math WooCommerce SEO guide. For broader configuration context, read the WordPress SEO guide.
Validation checklist
- View the live page source and identify every schema type emitted by the theme and plugins.
- Remove duplicate or contradictory Product and Article entities.
- Run the Rich Results Test and fix required-property errors.
- Use Schema Markup Validator for vocabulary issues outside Google features.
- Confirm canonical, indexability, author, date, image, and visible rating.
- Re-test after plugin, theme, or price changes.
Deploy changes to a small group first. Google recommends testing representative URLs and then using Search Console URL Inspection to see how the crawler views the page. Monitor enhancement reports, but remember that a clean report shows technical eligibility, not guaranteed stars or rankings.
Map the visible page first, then configure only the schema properties you can support and maintain.
FAQ
Should every affiliate post use Product schema?
No. Tutorials and broad comparisons are often Articles. Use Product and Review only when a specific product and genuine evaluation are the page’s main subject.
Can affiliate reviews receive star snippets?
They may be eligible when the content type and markup meet Google’s rules, but display is never guaranteed.
Can I add an AggregateRating from one review?
No. A single editorial score is a Review rating. AggregateRating represents multiple ratings with a real count and source.
Do FAQ sections still need FAQ schema?
Visible FAQs help readers, but adding FAQPage markup does not guarantee an enhanced result. Use it only when the questions and answers are present and the markup remains accurate.
